Set up your custody
You chose who holds your mail: this page is how each road is actually walked. All three keep the same address, and you can change roads any time. The philosophy lives at who holds your mail; this page is the toolbox.
The wire is live: mail.liir.net, port 995, mail over TLS. What is not built yet is the pairing that hands a device its credential. Nobody types a mail password on Liir, so Personal and Sovereign open when that pairing ships. You can choose either road today; Hosted carries your mail until then.
Personal · per device
free · the Liir app on one device
One device of yours collects the mail and our copy is deleted the moment it lands with you. How it will work:
- Install the Liir app on the device that will hold your mail.
- Pair it from your account page with one short code. The app receives its credential sealed. You never see it or type it.
- From then on that device collects from mail.liir.net, port 995, and our copy is deleted on the spot. Your address never changes.
Your other devices read from that one, on your own network. Until the app ships, Hosted keeps carrying your mail. Your choice is recorded, and the switch is one pairing.
Sovereign · your Liir owns it
your hardware, our rail
A box you run collects for all your devices and keeps the archive forever. Any always-on machine works: a mini PC, an old laptop, a Pi. For collecting and sending, no inbound ports, no DNS, no static IP: your box only ever dials out, so it works behind any home router, untouched.
- Install Stalwart on your box: one binary, one data folder.
- Pair the box from your account page with one short code. It receives its credential sealed. Nobody types a mail password.
- It collects from mail.liir.net:995 and deletes our copy after each fetch. It sends out through mail.liir.net:465, so your letters ride liir.net's reputation.
- Add your box's IMAP account to your phone and laptop: every device, your archive, your hardware.
Away from home, honestly: your box exposes nothing to the internet, which also means your phone on cell data cannot reach it by itself. The clean answer is a private network like Tailscale (free, ten minutes): your phone reaches your box from anywhere, and your box still shows the internet nothing. Skip it, and your archive is a home-wifi-only room.
Your box down for an hour, or a week? Mail waits at our door and your next collection gets it; that is mail's oldest feature. The fire problem becomes yours: one box is one copy. A second disk answers it, or the Vault's sealed backup does. Until the pairing ships, Hosted keeps carrying your mail; your choice is recorded.

What never changes
Your address stays yourname@liir.net on every road, your mark and identity stand apart from custody entirely, and you can change roads any time: the address never notices. Between arrival and your next collection a letter rests briefly on our shelf; sealed-on-arrival encryption is coming to close even that window.
